Republican Governor Kim Reynolds of Iowa announced on Friday that she will not be running for a third term in 2026.

Reynolds said in an online video that choosing not to run for re-election “was not an easy decision,” but noted a desire to spend more time with her family. Reynolds, first elected in 2018, is Iowa’s first female governor.

Reynolds was known for allegedly making a separate X account where she would criticize President Donald Trump and promoted Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign at the time.

She used the account @Kimberl26890376 to tarnish Trump in the lead-up to the Iowa caucuses at the time.

“Through the years my parents and my husband Kevin our daughters and grandchildren have stood by my side supporting me through every challenge and every victory. Now it’s time for me to be there for them,” Reynolds said.

Before getting the governor gig, Reynolds previously served as lieutenant governor and a state senator.

“This public service has been an incredible journey,” she said in an announcement video. “One that I wouldn’t trade for anything.”

In a statement, Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said Reynolds has been a “tremendous governor.”

“She has transformed Iowa with her bold, conservative leadership — putting parents first, cutting taxes, and supporting hardworking farmers and families in every corner of our state,” Ernst said in a statement. “Kim’s story is an inspiration to every Iowan. No matter the challenge, she has faced it head on with grace and grit. Kim is a fighter who always puts Iowa first. As her friend, it’s been a joy to watch Kim thrive as our governor. She has sacrificed so much to do what’s best for our state. I’m truly grateful for Kim’s selfless service to the people of Iowa. May God bless her and Kevin and their beautiful children and grandchildren.”

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said the governor is an “outstanding leader for Iowa.”

“We thank her for her leadership and know her vision to keep Iowa the best place to work, raise a family and retire will continue to make a difference in the current and future legislative sessions,” Grassley said in a statement. “Barbara and I thank Governor Reynolds for her friendship, leadership and service to the people of Iowa. She is an incredible role model and mentor to many. We wish her and Kevin the very best for years and years to come.”

Reynolds’ husband, first gentleman Kevin Reynolds, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2023, but in 2024 she said that he has responded well to treatment. They have three daughters and 11 grandchildren.

“I’m more energized than ever to finish what we started and to leave Iowa in the strongest possible position for the future,” she said.
