“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he stated. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
52-year-old Dane is married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, whom he shares two children with.
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week,” he continued.
“I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that kills nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing progressive muscle weakness and atrophy.
ALS leads to a range of symptoms, including difficulty with movement, speech, swallowing, and breathing, often eventually resulting in paralysis.
According to a survey, there were between 18,000 to 31,000 cases of ALS in the United States in 2017.
Unfortunately, the disease currently does not have a cure, and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is around 2 to 5 years depending on the age of the individual diagnosed, however some patients can live decades.
The most common cause of death stemming from ALS is respiratory failure, as over time the muscles responsible for breathing become so weak that it becomes impossible without assistance.
Other notable stars have been diagnosed with ALS including Aaran Lazar, John Driskell Hopkins, Eric Stevens, Joe Bonsall, Roberta Flack, Kenneth Mitchell and Stephen Hawking.
Dane is set to return on set of “Euphoria” on April 14th to play Cal Jacobs.
