NewsNation host Chris Cuomo cited how the Democratic Party is “coopted by the fringe” side of its supporters, which is President Donald Trump, whose “commonsense vibe” has gained support among the public.
Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to keep transgender athletes out of women’s sports, announcing that “women’s sports will be only for women” going forward. Biological men competing in women’s sports was one of several debates where voters saw Trump as “closer to normal,” Cuomo explained, as the president’s opposition to transgender athletes competing in women’s sports was seen as “common sense.”
Meanwhile, Cuomo contended that Democrats lost voters on this topic because of “the nuances” of it, pointing to claims that one would have “a better chance of being struck by lightning” than playing against a transgender athlete or that transgender athletes are “a very bullied class of people.” While Cuomo said these are “fair points,” they ultimately do not remove “the commonsense aspect” of this topic.
“And the left found itself in a dynamic that we’ve seen the right in also. This is the problem with the binary system: they are coopted by their fringe,” Cuomo explained on the PBD Podcast. “Radicals that fight their own culture wars their own way, which is not that everything is ok. If somebody wants it, it’s ok. Ok, that’s America. No, that’s not what I’m saying, Pat. You have to say it the same way. You have to believe it the way they want you to believe it.”
Cuomo further explained that cancel culture has contributed to people’s support for Trump’s position on transgender athletes competing in sports, as even speaking against the possibility of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports would result in cancelation. This, in turn, has pushed Democratic voters away from the party. Trump’s voting base currently consists of voters who supported Cuomo’s father, former Democratic New York Gov. Mario Cuomo.
When asked about what the future holds for the Democratic Party, Cuomo contended that it is selling “nothing” to voters, saying it is still “reeling” from the 2024 election. He said he is still getting emails from former Vice President Kamala Harris‘s “Fight Fund.” However, he added that the party is still “figuring it out” going forward, and this is not “an unusual place to be” after a party loses a major election.

As of late January, Trump’s favorability rating was 46% approval against 43% disapproval, giving him a net-positive rating of 3% among respondents. Additionally, 54% of respondents were optimistic about the next four years under Trump’s leadership, compared to 42% who were pessimistic, according to polling data released by Quinnipiac University.
In celebrating Trump’s executive order against transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, women’s sports activist Riley Gaines said she felt an “overwhelming feeling of gratitude” to the president. Gaines was one of several female athletes to spotlight the topic of men competing in women’s sports and the biological advantage transgender athletes have against women.
