Donald Trump has made an unexpected move involving tariffs, which has prompted strong reactions from countries such as Canada, Mexico, and China. Nearly 50 days into his second term, Trump has introduced a series of executive orders, including halting the TikTok ban and declaring there are “only two genders.” Tariffs have emerged as a key focus, with the White House explaining that these measures are aimed at combating the “extraordinary threat” posed by illegal immigration and drugs, particularly fentanyl. These tariffs, taxes imposed on foreign goods, are expected to increase the cost of goods in the U.S., which could eventually lead to higher prices for consumers.

In response to these tariffs, China announced plans to impose taxes on U.S. exports, including 15% tariffs on coal and liquefied natural gas, and 10% levies on crude oil, farming equipment, and some vehicles. Canada also retaliated, imposing 25% tariffs on CA $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressing strong support for his country’s position. Trump signed two executive orders to temporarily pause tariffs for a month on goods subject to the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), ensuring that 38% of imports from Canada and 50% from Mexico will avoid tariffs for now. However, these exemptions are temporary, with tariffs set to apply to all imports after April 2. Despite these changes, Trump expressed confidence that the measures would benefit U.S. interests and emphasized his desire to reverse what he sees as unfair trade practices.
