The Trump administration has indicated its intent to seek a change of venue for California Governor Gavin Newsom’s lawsuit challenging its tariff policies, aiming to move the case from a federal court in San Francisco to one in New York.

Justice Department (DOJ) attorneys on Thursday argued that the dispute should take place in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York — since it has sole jurisdiction over matters related to tariffs.
The Democrat governor, who is being considered as a possible 2028 presidential candidate for the Democrat Party, filed the suit alongside California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D-Calif.) in U.S. District Court of Northern California earlier this week.
The lawsuit argues that the 47th president went above his authority, by putting in place emergency powers to impose extensive tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China.
Additionally, the lawsuit highlights Trump’s invocation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977, claiming it does not authorize presidential tariff imposition without explicit congressional approval.
“Congress has the power to impose tariffs, not the president,” Bonta told the Washington Post.
The state’s attorney general claimed that President Trump exceeded Constitutional boundaries.
“The president has overreached again. He’s welcome to exercise his authority within his given jurisdiction, but not outside his given authority,” Bonta stated.
The Democrat governor declared that the tariffs will have significant economic drawbacks, especially in California, which has the world’s fifth-largest economy. California’s economy is also the largest in the United States, with a gross state product (GSP) of $4.132 trillion — as of Q3 2024.
“No state is poised to lose more than the state of California,” Newsom argued during a press conference following the lawsuit’s filing.
Newsom went on to criticize Congress, asserting that its members are failing to fulfill their responsibilities.
“Where the hell is Congress? Where the hell is Speaker Johnson? Do your job,” Newsom said, referring to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).
The lawsuit alleges that Trump’s tariffs pose immediate threats to California’s economic stability — harming sectors that include agriculture, entertainment, and manufacturing. State officials say that the resulting increased costs would “directly impact” consumers and potentially hinder California’s policy initiatives.
“All told, President Trump’s tariffs will transform the State of California’s economic situation, put at risk its position as the fifth largest economy in the world, and directly impact Governor Newsom’s ability to deliver on his policy goals for all Californians,” the legal filing contends.
Additionally, three lawsuits challenging the tariffs have been filed by a number of advocacy groups and the Blackfeet Nation tribe from Montana.
The GOP administration recently paused some proposed tariffs for 90 days, aiming for negotiations with trading partners like Israel, Japan, Vietnam, and South Korea. However, broad tariffs remain on nearly all imported goods — with significant levies on China.

Two illegal immigration cases… two very different tales. NBC, CBS, and ABC completely ignored the conviction of the illegal immigrant who raped and murdered Maryland mother of five, Rachel Morin. Instead, according to the Media Research Center’s Curtis Houck, they spent over 64 minutes of sympathetic airtime on Kilmar Abrego Garcia — an illegal immigrant with past MS-13 ties who was deported to El Salvador. The networks framed him as a “Maryland man” and “father” who was “mistakenly deported” — never mind that he faced threats from a rival gang in that country, and could’ve been deported elsewhere. Court records show his now-wife filed a protective order against him in 2021, saying he punched her, made her bleed, and tore her clothes. Yet Democrat Senator Chris Van Hollen flew to El Salvador to meet him — not Rachel Morin’s grieving mother Patty, who lives in his state. That’s the mainstream media’s agenda on full display. 🇺🇸🚨 ICE SWEEPS NYC STREETS CLEAN OF 206 CRIMINAL MIGRANTS IN MASSIVE TAKEDOWN
Federal agents just executed their largest NYC raid in months, removing 206 illegal migrants including hardened gang members, killers, child abusers and drug traffickers that sanctuary policies had… https://t.co/PxZRcBpol8pic.twitter.com/5EsBYroQ9i
“New York is much safer today because of the hard work of ICE and our law enforcement partners,” stated acting ICE Director Todd Lyons. “Throughout this enhanced enforcement operation, we targeted the most dangerous alien offenders in some of the most crime-infested neighborhoods in and around the city of New York. Our efforts resulted in 206 arrests in just one week.”
The majority of the individuals arrested had “egregious criminal histories to include manslaughter, rape, assault, drug trafficking and sex assault against minors,” including a 22-year-old member of the notorious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, according to ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations New York City Acting Field Office Director Judith Almodovar.
“The success of this enhanced operation highlights the resolve of ICE and our federal partners in keeping the country safe from violent criminal aliens,” Almodovar added.
A number of the individuals are also believed to have been involved in MS-13, Sureños, and the 18th Street gang, according to NBC New York.
58-year-old Mexican national Adnan Paulino-Flores was among the individuals arrested. Paulino-Flores has a criminal history of sexual abuse of a person incapable of consent or physically helpless, while victimizing another individual to sexual contact without consent, according to Fox News.
Another individual arrested, 58-year-old illegal immigrant from Ecuador named Jaime Gustavo Quizpi-Romero had a criminal history of assault with intent to cause physical injury with a weapon or instrument and strangulation, as well as obstructing the breath and blood circulation resulting in serious injury.
The arrests took place between April 6th-12th in New York City, Long Island, and the Lower Hudson Valley region.
Meanwhile, Democrat NYC Mayor Eric Adams, who is running for re-election as an independent, has indicated support for ICE, despite his city having sanctuary laws.
“One of the big mistakes that’s being made in some parts of the far-left philosophy is that ICE is a criminal organization. They are not, they are part of our law enforcement community,” he stated. “We have to get bad, dangerous people off our streets.”
“I don’t know why we want to romanticize what dangerous gangs are. They’re dangerous gangs and we’re going to do everything possible to collaborate with federal officials to remove these dangerous gangs off our streets,” he continued. “We had an undocumented person that raped a 14-year-old child. I’m not on his side. I’m on the side of justice to go after him.”
The FBI New York, DEA New York, ATF New York, USMC New York, DSS New York, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York were also involved in the multi-agency sting operation.

In addition to launching a re-designed COVID.gov website on Friday that revealed the “true origins” of the COVID-19 virus, the Trump administration chastised former Democrat officials and the media for enforcing stringent regulations, rejecting the idea that the virus originated in a lab, and shooting down alternative medicine.

“This administration prioritizes transparency over all else,” a senior administration official told Fox News Digital Friday. “The American people deserve to know the truth about the COVID pandemic, and we will always find ways to reach communities with that message.”
Being previously devoted to promoting the COVID-19 vaccine to Americans, the website now guides readers through evidence of the lab leak theory, which was initially shot down by Democrats who claimed it was a “racist conspiracy theory.”
The website also mentions how former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci promoted the idea that COVID-19 originated naturally in China, from a “wet market” nearby in Wuhan.
Former President Joe Biden has since pardoned Fauci for “any offenses against” the United States that he “may have” committed.
“‘The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2’ publication — which was used repeatedly by public health officials and the media to discredit the lab leak theory — was promoted by Dr. Fauci to push the preferred narrative that COVID-19 originated naturally,” the site states, while launching into five bullet points on the origins of the virus.
The new website explains that a biological feature of the virus was not present in nature. It also points out that China’s “foremost SARs research lab” is located in Wuhan, China, the location of the first coronavirus case, and that: “if there was evidence of a natural origin it would have already surfaced.”
It’s never a bad time to play this clip of Jon Stewart talking about the lab leak theory on the Colbert show in 2021, but today seems like a particularly good day to do it.
“There’s been an outbreak of chocolaty goodness near Hershey, Pennsylvania. What do you think happened?” pic.twitter.com/dCQAurNb1W
In the early days of the pandemic, scientists and media outlets dismissed that the COVID-19 virus originated from a lab leak, but the Trump administration’s CIA confirmed earlier in 2025 that this scenario was the most likely case.
In 2023, former FBI Director Christopher Wray and the Department of Energy also stated that there was evidence linking COVID-19 to a lab leak.
Meanwhile, the website explains to visitors how COVID-era regulations, like mask requirements and social distancing, came to be.
“The ‘six feet apart’ social distancing recommendation — which shut down schools and small business across the country — was arbitrary and not based on science,” it states. “During closed-door testimony, Dr. Fauci testified that guidance ‘sort of just appeared.”
“There was no conclusive evidence that masks effectively protected Americans from COVID-19. Public health officials flip-flopped on the efficacy of masks without providing Americans scientific data — causing a massive uptick in public distrust.”
The website states that the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic of the House Oversight Committee provided the page’s content directly.
“Public health officials often mislead the American people through conflicting messaging, knee-jerk reactions, and a lack of transparency,” the website states under a portion called “COVID-19 misinformation.” “Most egregiously, the federal government demonized alternative treatments and disfavored narratives, such as the lab leak theory, in a shameful effort to coerce and control the American people’s health decisions.”
In 2020, before U.S. intelligence officials, including Wray and the Department of Energy, announced that the virus most likely originated in Wuhan, China from a wet market — Trump claimed to have seen evidence that the virus originated there at the nearby lab, a claim that was rejected by a slew of media sources.
Since then, numerous publications have now released articles demonstrating the theory’s “plausibility.” For example, the New York Times published a piece in March asserting that the scientific community had “badly misled” the public in an attempt to stifle the theory, despite the fact that the outlet’s own writer had labeled it “racist.”
